]]> Join SOM at the Passenger Terminal Expo (PTE World) at ExCeL London this month to discover how our latest aviation projects are redefining the future of airport design and passenger experience.
On March 17, Design Partner Scott Duncan will join Michael McMurray, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation, to discuss Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and a transformational terminal development program, known as ORDNext, a decade long effort to reimagine the airport’s future.
As the first new building within the ORDNext phase, Concourse D is a striking new satellite facility designed by SOM in collaboration with Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA), and Arup, to elevate the passenger experience from curbside to gate. Designed with light‑filled interiors, expressive structural “tree” columns, and flexible gate layouts, the concourse will add 19 gates, expansive lounge, retail, and dining spaces, and welcoming public areas shaped by natural forms and daylight. During this session, Duncan and McMurray will discuss the program’s design strategies and lessons learned. Gain insight into the innovative construction approaches and shared vision driving the program forward. 
On March 19, Associate Principal Jordan Pierce will join Sanjeev Guness, CEO of InfraRose, to discuss the redevelopment of N’Djili International Airport in Kinshasa. 
With construction already underway, SOM’s masterplan includes a full placement of existing terminal operations, along with new infrastructure and facilities to support both international and domestic growth. Modular and scalable, the new terminal will accommodate up to 5 million passengers annually by 2037, with long-term capacity expandable to 9.1 million by 2050.
The session will explore the opportunities and challenges of this unique undertaking, demonstrating how local private enterprise can drive innovative airport development while embedding sustainability and operational excellence.

]]> Commissioner Michael McMurray of the Chicago Department of Aviation has unveiled the first public video animation of The New Concourse D at O’Hare International Airport. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in collaboration with Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA), and Arup, The New Concourse D is the first major component of the ORDNext program. The new concourse will feature 19 flexible gates, naturally lit multi-level spaces, and welcoming environments for rest, dining, shopping, and play—redefining the passenger experience while increasing capacity and operational flexibility.
Currently under construction just south of Concourse C, the new Concourse D is scheduled for completion in late 2028 and represents a significant milestone in the transformation of O’Hare.

]]> Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) welcomes Kashyap Bhimjiani as Design Principal and Airports Practice Leader, based in our New York studio. 
Kashyap brings two decades of professional experience on aviation projects of all scales around the world—from master planning to terminal design. Prior to joining SOM, he served as a Principal, Aviation Leader, and Chair of the Global Aviation Group at Grimshaw, and previously held the role of Design Experience Leader in the Aviation studio at Gensler. 
In his new role, Kashyap will lead SOM’s global airports practice alongside Derek A.R Moore, FAIA, PhD, shaping business development strategy, project delivery, client engagement, and team growth across domestic and international markets.
“Kashyap’s work reflects a deep understanding of how architecture can elevate the passenger experience while meeting the complex demands of aviation infrastructure,” said SOM Partner Peter Lefkovits. “His global experience and design leadership will be instrumental as we continue to expand and strengthen our airports practice worldwide.” 
Kashyap has led the planning, design, and delivery of aviation projects domestically and internationally. He has experience working with various clientele, including airport authorities, P3 airport operators, design-build consortiums, and airlines. Known for aligning client goals with innovative and efficient solutions, he places a strong emphasis on the experiential quality of design to create memorable passenger experiences. His work balances beauty with practicality, ensuring each design is informed by purpose and performance.
