Mina Hasman to Join City CDR Initiative Webinar on Urban Carbon Removal

On April 7, Sustainability Director Mina Hasman will join a webinar hosted by the City CDR Initiative, bringing together leading voices from local governments, industry, and research to explore the evolving role of carbon dioxide removal in cities.
As part of the conversation, “How to Build Carbon Sink Cities,” Hasman will join fellow experts to discuss how cities can become powerful drivers of climate restoration, leveraging carbon sinks and removal strategies to address pressing social and ecological challenges. She will also discuss SOM’s Urban Sequoia—a research-based proposition that envisions a new carbon removal economy and a more resilient future for cities.
The webinar builds on a special event hosted at SOM’s New York studio during Climate Week NYC last year, which explored the concept of carbon sink cities—positioning urban environments not only as places to live and work, but as active agents of carbon removal, resilience, and climate innovation.

SOM Signs AIA Materials Pledge

We are pleased to announce that SOM has signed the AIA Materials Pledge—a step that furthers our ongoing commitment to choosing healthy and sustainable materials in our design projects. As a complement to the AIA 2030 Commitment, which focuses on operational carbon, the Materials Pledge addresses the impact of building materials, a key factor in whole life carbon impact. The pledge centers on preferring materials with high performance in five key sustainable impact areas: Human Health, Climate Health, Ecosystem Health, Social Health and Equity, and Circular Economy. As a signatory, we have committed to reporting our annual progress toward aligning our practice with these principles.
SOM has a history of materials research and innovation—from developing bio-based construction materials to implementing a comprehensive program to decarbonize and de-chemicalize specifications across all of our projects. We have voluntarily disclosed embodied carbon on our projects to the AIA for the past three years. The Materials Pledge builds on this work by advancing industry-wide consistency and transparency, improving Life Cycle Analysis integration, and providing higher-quality data for reporting and optimization. By standardizing how firms consistently assess, select, and specify healthier, lower-carbon materials, the pledge gives manufacturers clearer signals and improves the quality of information available to design teams. Together with the 121 firms that have signed the pledge to date, SOM is helping to push the industry toward a low-carbon future.

SOM Sustainability Leaders Participate in 2025 ASHRAE Building Decarbonization Conference

From October 22-24, three of SOM’s Sustainable Engineering Studio (SES) leaders presented their work at the 2025 ASHRAE Building Decarbonization Conference in Chicago, where Principal Luke Leung served as chair of the steering committee that shaped the event’s program. The conference, in its fourth year, brought together architects, engineers, and developers across the built environment to exchange ideas on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in new and existing buildings, with a significant focus on strategies for scaling up decarbonization.
Sustainability Directors Marzia Sedino and Shona O’Dea joined Leung in a seminar that explored pathways to go beyond net-zero carbon—from net-positive operations and all-electric buildings to the evolving relationship between human expertise and AI in design. Together, they highlighted SOM’s ongoing leadership in climate-responsive design and decarbonization.

Pournamasi Rath Named Among Crain’s New York 2025 Leaders in Sustainability

Pournamasi Rath has been selected to the 2025 Crain’s New York Business Notable Leaders in Sustainability list. Honored among 35 leaders from across industries in New York City, Pournamasi was recognized for her role in shaping SOM’s climate strategy across scales and typologies. A pioneer early on, she helped certify the first Passive House project in the state of New York. Today, she is leading the sustainability strategy for The New York Climate Exchange, a first-of-its-kind climate research campus targeting triple net-zero and the Living Building Challenge. Beyond buildings, she helped launch City CDR—a global initiative that provides a framework for carbon sink cities—and is a champion of New York City’s Climate Mobilization Act. Congratulations, Pournamasi!
